ABOUT HOLLY HELLER

It was out of her own experience of being the caregiver for a loved one with hepatitis and a miraculous transplant, that Holly was given the impetus to help others in need, and create a place for them to heal.  Since it was almost impossible to find support and information during those traumatic years, and still difficult today, she is committed to offering this safe environment to those seeking help.  Hepatitis C, liver disease, and transplantation are among the most challenging health experiences that we can face, and you don't need to face them alone anymore.

Having founded and facilitated successful support groups for the past 13 years, Holly brings her expertise and compassion to her coaching practice where she actively teams with health care providers including hepatologists and gastroenterologists, to support patients and their caregivers in the most difficult of situations.  Her compassionate nature will safely allow you to be completely open, and experience the support of having a true ally.  You'll find yourself relaxing as you unravel the information, treatment options and complexities of the nature of this disease.  It is a comfort to know that you are not alone, and that many before you have walked this difficult path and come out the other end.  Together we’ll take the time to explore your every question and concern.  This is a safe and confidential arena for you to address even the most private of issues.  Holly listens carefully, as she works with you to find the strategies that will work for you and your Hepatitis C.

As a health counselor and a leader in the liver community for over 13 years, Holly is proud to have had the opportunity to help and support people with information on Hepatitis C from all walks of life face the many challenges of liver disease from treatment to transplant.  Through her leadership in support groups, Chairmanship of the Public Education Committee, service on the Board of Directors, and most importantly, her first hand experience with hepatitis C and transplantation, she is a natural in this role.  Holly has been affiliated with the American Liver Foundation (ALF) and the United Liver Association (ULA) for over 18 years.  Holly holds a Masters’ Degree in Educational Counseling, a Bachelors Degree in Communication, is a Certified Coach through CTA, and is a member of The International Coach Federation.  Her professional experience includes the following:

-         17 years of service on the American Liver Foundation and
United Liver Association Board of Directors

-         Lead facilitator of (4) ALF Liver Support Groups
-         Co-author of the ALF Liver Support Group Training Manual
-         Organizer and Facilitator of first ALF Transplantation Seminar
-         Communication Consultant

“Part of the comfort results from really listening to what her clients are saying -- and to what they're not saying…this caring and empathetic listening often evokes the soothing and safe atmosphere to look at their options and gain perspective on their life -- transformation and a positive change in their attitude give them the strength they are seeking in order to go forward with their lives."

WHAT IS COACHING

Personal coaching is a relatively new profession, yet everyday more articles are written about its' proven success.  As a coach, Holly is someone who is there for you, bringing you many benefits, including: providing unconditional support, giving you the required information on Hepatitis C that you need, and identifying your strengths and areas of concern and helping you to explore them. She can help in both illuminating fears and eliminating them, helping you to clarify your choices and partnering with you to discover the options and solutions you might need to achieve your maximum level of wellness.

Depending upon your particular situation, whether it be hepatitis C, B, A, PBC, PSC, autoimmune hepatitis, or liver transplant issues, your coaching might include any combination of personal exploration, focusing, treatment and goal setting, encouragement, celebration and personal growth and development.  Many clients report that the quality of their life and relationships have improved, despite their disease, with the help of coaching.

Coaching is a confidential, safe environment in which your personal well-being and health are the number one priority.  Holly works with you via skillfully conducted coaching sessions.  Much of your progress can occur between sessions, when you implement the strategies that you and your doctor have agreed will lead to the most dramatic results.

Holly conducts most coaching sessions over the telephone.  “Telecoaching” as it is sometimes called, is the standard practice of coaching. This type of coaching can be as efficient as in-person coaching, and allows you to be coached from the convenience of your own home or office, and you are not limited by your health issues.  Not only that, but telecoaching gives you the opportunity to be coached by the most experienced coach in this field, without geographical restrictions.  Many clients have specific hepatitis and liver concerns, as well as goals in mind, and many are also trying to make changes in other aspects of their lives including their relationships, or their overall sense of well-being.

AND WHAT WOULD WE TALK ABOUT…The answer: YOU, your particular diagnosis and circumstances, your relationship with your doctor, understanding prevention, care and treatment, your work and personal relationships, whether or not to disclose and to whom, dating difficulties, nutritional concerns, alternative therapies and herbs.

Holly is an active listener, experienced and compassionate about your issues, and will gently encourage you when you need to be pushed and support you unconditionally.  If you think that you are ready for coaching, please send an e-mail to hepcounselor@aol.com Indicating that you would like to schedule a complimentary 15-minute coaching session.  It is strongly recommended that, prior to your pre-session, you review the information on this Website - especially the What Is Coaching? section.

A FEW DISTINCTIONS OF COACHING:

Coaching vs. Therapy:  Therapists work with clients that need professional help (sometimes prescriptive), to work towards healing, recovery, and issue resolution.  (Referrals are made in the appropriate situations.)  Coaches work with clients who want an objective partner to help them evolve and support them in their quest for wellness.

Therapists are experts in behavioral sciences, trained to deal with deep-seated emotional issues ~ the past.  Coaches see their client’s health potential, and help them ~ in the present, in conjunction with their medical advisors, to achieve their desired outcome.

Therapists are required to keep their personal thoughts and feelings removed.  Coaches use personal disclosure as a tool to achieve a comfort level in which the client can be completely open.

Coaching vs. Your Best Friend, Spouse or Boss:  Your best friend may offer you advise, even rides to your appointments, but may not have the unlimited time, patience, or knowledge, to listen to all that you need to say.  Your spouse (however loving and supportive, hasn't experienced this disease) is probably managing a job, and may be carrying the extra ‘burden’ of dealing with other things for you right now, as well as facing their own uncertainties and fears.  In terms of your boss, the decision to disclose your disease (when and how, and how much) is your choice, and may prove to be a critical decision.  Coaches are trained listeners, are there just for you, without distractions, or their own agenda or fears to interfere.  You are the complete focus of their attention, and they have the benefit of experience with your particular condition.

Coaching vs. Your Health Care Providers:  If you do not already have a hepatologist, or other doctor, who you feel comfortable with, this is the time to find one, and get started with medical testing and care. In the best case scenario, your doctor, and healthcare providers should have your complete confidence in providing for you the best medical treatment and options available to you.  A coach is not a doctor, a nurse, or in anyway a replacement for any medical provider.  You should definitely be under the care of a physician and discuss any change in your actual health care with them. Your coach is a member of your team, and will support you in working with them.

Coaching vs. Going It Alone:  Being newly diagnosed, or having a sudden change in your health can be frightening.  Some patients never feel as alone as when they find out that they have hepatitis, another liver disease, or are faced with a liver transplant.  Terrifying thoughts can run rampant through our heads.  Coaches are available and have the experience to shed light, or help you find the answers for many of these fears and concerns.  They know how to support you in many of the situations, decisions, and issues that you will be facing; they have helped many before you.
